Tomato rice recipe or tomato biryani is a south Indian dish from Tamilnadu. It is a simple, spicy, flavourful and mouth-watering one pot dish made with rice, tomatoes, spices and herbs. This dish is very famous in Tamilnadu and also known as “thakkali sadam”. In Tamil “thakkali” means tomato and “sadam” means rice.

If you are trying to make a tasty dish out of leftover rice, this recipe is going to be your favourite, and you can prepare tomato rice recipe or tomato biryani under 20 minutes. It is normally made just with onions and tomatoes but you can always add any other vegetables of your choice. Tomato is rice is so delicious, it can be eaten without any sides, but it goes best with a raita and papad. This dish is a perfect lunch to carry and go.

Preparation:

  1. Take a pan and pour 2 tablespoons of oil in it.
  2. Next, add ½ teaspoon of shahi jeera in the pan.
  3. Add a cinnamon stick about 2 inches long in the pan.
  4. Add 4-5 cloves in the pan.
  5. Now, add 2 bay leaves in the pan.
  6. Sauté the ingredients in the pan till they turn aromatic.
  7. Now, add 2 green chillies in the pan.
  8. Next, add 1 big sized finely chopped onion in the pan.
  9. Add 1 teaspoon of ginger garlic paste in the pan.
  10. Sauté the onions and the ginger garlic paste well.
  11. Add 2 big sized finely chopped tomatoes in the pan.
  12. Add 1/4th teaspoon of turmeric powder in the pan.
  13. Next, add 1 teaspoon of salt in the pan.
  14. Stir the mixture with a spatula in the pan.
  15. Keep stirring till the tomatoes soften in the pan.
  16. Add 2 teaspoons of garam masala over the mixture in the pan.
  17. Now, add 2 teaspoons of Mirchi powder in the pan.
  18. Sauté the mixture well in the pan.
  19. Fry the mixture till the oil starts to separate in the pan.
  20. Add 2 glass of boiled basmati rice in the pan.
  21. Mix the rice well with the gravy in the pan.
  22. Add a handful of coriander leaves in the pan.
  23. Transfer some of it into a plate.
  24. Tomato rice is ready to serve, you could garnish it with some more coriander leaves.

Notes-
• Use ripe and sour tomatoes to bring out the best taste.
• For making it children friendly you could use tomato puree instead of chopped tomatoes.
• After adding the rice to pan, gently mix it, try not to break the rice or mash them.
• If you do not have any of the above spices, you can skip it.
