1 tsp MIRCHI POWDER
1/4 tsp TURMERIC POWDER
1 tsp SALT
small piece tamarind TAMARIND
as required WATER
OTHER INGREDIENTS :
1 tbsp OIL
1/2 tsp MUSTARD
1/4 tsp CUMIN SEEDS
1/2 tsp URAD DAL
pinch HING
2 RED MIRCHI
6 GARLIC
few CURRY LEAVES
2 tbsp CORIANDER LEAVES

Follow these steps (Tomato Pappu Recipe Andhra Style):

  1. Soak ½ cup of toor dal for about 15 minutes and add it to a pressure cooker.
  2. Chop 2 tomatoes, 1 average sized onion and about 1 green chilli and put them inside the pressure cooker.
  3. Pour about a cup of Tamarind extract, 1 teaspoon Mirchi powder, ¼ spoon Turmeric Powder and about 1 teaspoon of salt into the cooker.
  4. Add sufficient amount of water.
  5. Cover the cooker with its lid and let the vegetables inside cook, soaking in the flavours from the masalas.
  6. Wait patiently for the cooker to blow out 5 whistles.
  7. Open the pressure cooker. The tomato-pappu is almost ready. Mash the vegetables well together.
  8. In a fresh pan, put 1 tablespoon of oil to which add ½ teaspoon mustard seeds and ¼ teaspoon cumin seeds.
  9. Add ½ teaspoon urad dal to the oil followed by some curry leaves and hing to perfect the tadka.
  10. Add about 2 full size Red mirchi’s and 6 stems of Garlic.
  11. The ingredients will cook together making spluttering sounds in the oil.
  12. When cooked, add the Tadka to our freshly prepared Dal.
  13. Mix it well inside the cooker for a uniformly structured taste.
  14. Add a bunch of coriander leaves from the top for garnishing.
  15. Simmer the dal for about 2 minutes.
  16. Tangy and tasty Tomato Pappu is ready to be served.
