Ingredients for Tamarind Rice Powder

  • Tamarind – 1 lemon-sized ball

  • Chana Dal – 1 tbsp

  • Urad Dal – 1 tbsp

  • Red Chilies – 8 to 10 (adjust spice)

  • Coriander Seeds – 2 tbsp

  • Black Pepper – 1 tsp

  • Fenugreek Seeds – Β½ tsp

  • Sesame Seeds – 1 tbsp

  • Curry Leaves – few sprigs

  • Turmeric Powder – ΒΌ tsp

  • Asafoetida (Hing) – ΒΌ tsp

  • Oil – 1 tsp

  • Salt – as required


Preparation Method

  1. Roast Dals & Spices – Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan. Dry roast chana dal, urad dal, red chilies, coriander seeds, black pepper, and fenugreek until golden and aromatic.

  2. Add Aromatics – Toss in curry leaves and sesame seeds; roast lightly.

  3. Finish with Powders – Add turmeric powder and asafoetida, then turn off the flame. Let the mixture cool completely.

  4. Grind with Tamarind – Blend the roasted mixture with tamarind and salt into a slightly coarse powder.

  5. Store Fresh – Keep in an airtight jar. Stays fresh for 2–3 months.

  • Mix 1–2 tsp with hot steamed rice and a drizzle of ghee or oil.
